Originally from Genoa, Italy, Umberto read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Oxford. He then spent a year in the financial sector, specialising in high-yield credit, before returning to Oxford for a master’s in Statistical Science, where his research focussed on simulation-based inference and applications of neural posterior estimation to earthquake impact forecasting. He is interested in theoretical guarantees for online and high-dimensional settings, applications of machine learning to network data, and AI alignment. In his free time, he enjoys cycling, linguistics, scuba diving, and reading.
