Sean is from Wexford, Ireland, and studied Applied and Computational Mathematics at University College Dublin. During his undergraduate thesis, he first explored statistical machine learning by using Gaussian processes as surrogates for expensive gravitational-wave simulations. He then pursued a master’s degree in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing at the University of Oxford, where he gained further experience in deep learning and completed a thesis on optimal sequential acquisition for chemical testing. At StatML, Sean plans to work on active learning for experimental design in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority. More broadly, he is interested in understanding how modern AI systems can be used to tackle important real-world problems. Outside of work, Sean enjoys running, playing squash and going out with friends.
