My name is Horia and I grew up in Romania, before coming to the UK in 2020 to study for an MMath at Oxford. During my time there, I studied various topics in pure mathematics and statistics, with some of my favourite courses being in stochastic differential equations, functional analysis, commutative algebra, graph theory and statistical machine learning. My masters thesis was on statistical properties of denoising diffusion models, and it explored strong convergence guarantees for a large class of target distributions. For my research, I’m broadly interested in applying mathematical techniques to questions in machine learning, with a focus in generative modelling and reinforcement learning. As part of the CDT, I’m looking forward to exploring areas in statistics and ML I’m less familiar with, gaining new research perspectives during internships or placements, and talking about new maths with my colleagues. In my free time, I enjoy playing football and chess, doing callisthenics and reading.
